NEW DELHI: A blistering heatwave in Pakistan has claimed over 800 lives, largely in the port city of Karachi in the country’s Sindh Province. On Wednesday, when the toll crossed the 800 mark, the number of deaths in the day were lower than preceding days, as the temperature fell from to 98 degrees Fahrenheit, or 37 degrees Celsius. It had been as high as 113 degrees Fahrenheit, or 45 degrees Celsius.

The Sindh government, meanwhile, declared Wednesday a holiday to encourage people to stay indoors and out of the sun. Schools and government offices were ordered shut.
