Upcoming Indian racer Kush Maini will compete in the BRDC British Formula 3 Championship for the 2018 season. The 17-year-old moves to the UK from the Italian Formula 4 Series, where he was racing for the last two years.

In his first year in a single-seater competition in 2016, Maini raced for BVM Racing finishing 16th overall and was the fifth best rookie. He not only took an outright podium, but also claimed seven rookie podium finishes.

For 2017, Maini stayed back in the Italian F4 but switched to Jenzer Motorsport where he finished a credible seventh, scoring two podiums and 114 points. He also made guest appearances in the ADAC German Formula 4 championship.

After spending two years in the Italian-based series, Maini has made the decision to head to the UK-based F3 championship. He will race for British outfit Lanan Racing – the same team for whom his elder brother Arjun competed in 2014 when the series ran as BRDC F4.

“I’m really excited to be driving for Lanan Racing and in the BRDC F3 Championship,” said Maini upon the announcement. “Lanan has a history of success and based on the pre-season tests I’ve done, I’m highly confident about the season next year.

“Racing in British F3 was always an aim of mine and I’m looking forward to the challenges that will be presented to me in the 2018 season,” the Bangalorean added, whose aim will be to fight for the title like Toby Sowery did with Lanan in the 2017 season.

Maini undertook three tests in the winter with Lanan prior to the confirmation. Lanan’s team principal Graham Johnson added: “We are very pleased to confirm Kush Maini as one of our drivers for the 2018 BRDC British F3 Championship.

“We’ve already started a comprehensive test and development programme so he can learn the British circuits ahead of the season and he’s showing a lot of potential. It’s great to be re-united with the Maini family, with whom we enjoyed a fantastic season in 2014, and we hope for more of the same in 2018.”

The 2018 British F3 season will start during the March 31 – April 1 weekend at Oulton Park, which will be followed by rounds in Rockhingam (April 28-29), Snetterton (May 26-27), Silverstone (June 9-10), Spa-Francorchamps (July 21-22), Brands Hatch (August 4-5), Donington Park (September 22-23) and Silverstone again (October 13-14).

Prior to his single-seater debut, Maini has enjoyed a successful karting career with multiple Top 5 and Top 10 finishes respectively in the various levels of competition in India and Europe.
