SRINAGAR: The Shopian killings triggered student protests across Kashmir with the government forces hard put to quell the anger visible in educational institutions all of Thursday. Girl students also participated, wearing full veils at different points.

At Nowgam campus of Central University of Kashmir, students offered funeral prayers in absentia for the slain civilians and militants.

Students of Kashmir University boycotted their classes and held protests against the killings. The students carrying placards against the violence and the government marched on the campus of the varsity.

The students of Islamia College in Hawal, Amar Singh College, Government Degree College Bemina and other colleges in the city took out protest demonstrations while raising slogans for ‘Azadi’.

At many places there was a violent confrontation between the students and the forces that had been deployed in strength. The students set set ablaze a police picket outside Indoor Stadium at Wazirbagh area.

Clashes were also reported from Government Degree College Kupwara where students also held protests.

The class work remained suspended in these educational institutes owing to protests.

The sorrow of affected families turned into anger with the protests gathering momentum after the killing of four civilians and 13 militants in a single day.
