SRINAGAR: Following an uproar in the Valley, the Jammu and Kashmir police today ordered a probe into the assault on a middle-aged woman in Shopian district where a residential house was raided by a police party last night.

The incident took place at Shadab Karewa village of Shopian district where, according to a J&K police spokesperson, a raid was carried out to arrest a suspect wanted in alleged abduction of a “minor”.

A 15 second video that has gone viral on social media shows commotion in a dimly lit room of the house with two policemen surrounding a middle-aged woman who is sitting on the floor.

The video shows one policeman purportedly grabbing the woman by her neck. The woman is visibly crying in pain, while the other policeman grabs her left arm.

A furore breaks out and the cries of woman grow in intensity. Then, one of the two cops purportedly shouts out his suspicion that the assault was being filmed and the video comes to an abrupt end.

The present condition of the woman could not be immediately verified.

Since today morning, the video has gone viral on social media in the Valley following which the J&K police ordered a probe “to examine the conduct of the policemen,” the police spokesperson said in a statement.

The spokesperson said when the police party raided the house “to recover the abductee, they found two other accused Mohsin Khan and Saleem Khan.”

"While trying to effect the arrest of these accused, the other family members including women attacked the police to prevent them from effecting the lawful arrest of accused and successfully managed the escape of one of the accused,” the statement said, adding three policemen suffered injuries in the alleged attack.

The traction gained by the video on social media in the Valley is a stark reminder of the highhandedness security persons often indulge in while performing their duties.

Meanwhile, five suspected militants have been gunned down in an encounter in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district where authorities have suspended mobile internet service to prevent deterioration of law and order situation.

During the ongoing clashes between locals and forces at the site of the encounter, at least dozen protesters suffered injuries.

Health officials said ten among the injured have suffered pellet injuries and they have been referred to different hospital, depending on the gravity of the injuries.
