NEW DELHI: An outrageous incident of gang rape has been reported from Bareilly where not only a woman was raped in a bus by two men but her 14 days old son was also killed. The woman, who is from Rampur, was returning after attending a function in a nearby village, Khapuriya, and was assaulted after all other passengers had alighted from bus.

The incident was narrated later on by the victim’s three year old daughter, who had managed to hide herself behind a seat in the bus and witnessed the whole ordeal of her mother. The conductor and driver of the bus after reaching the destination promised the woman that they could drop her to her village since they too were from around the same area. But after the bus had emptied they assaulted the woman and in the scuffle also threw the victim’s infant child, who died on the spot.

"The incident took place when fellow passengers had left the bus. We have booked the two accused under Sections 376 D (gang-rape) and 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC and sent them to jail. We will also book them under provisions of the Gangster Act," Superintendent of Police (rural areas) Yamuna Prasad said on Wednesday according to media reports.

The incident came to light the next day when the woman’s husband started searching for her along with other villagers and found the unconscious woman along with the dead infant and young girl on the roadside.

The girl told the police that to blunt her resistance the assailants also forced alcohol into her mouth, which caused inebriation. After the act the duo got down from the bus and laid the unconscious woman on the roadside, giving the chance of an escape bid to the young girl who herself in the bushes.

Women activists from the area have decried the charges pressed since the accused have been booked for culpable homicide for the infant’s death which, according to them, was a downright murder.
