Has Indian Comedy Finally Come Of Age?

We Indians are particularly notorious for not being able to laugh at ourselves. Whilst the rest of the world ridicules its stars, politicians, sports heroes and regular Joe/Jane, we sit partake only when the butt of the joke is far removed from home.

Fortunately, this seems to be changing. All India Bakchod (the name says it all) just won the internet doing what has been considered un-doable till now. Following a comedy format known as “the roast” -- the comedians take down Bollywood actors Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, and director Karan Johar.

Granted, the jokes are a tad repetitive (Tanmaya is fat, Karan Johar is gay, Ranveer Singh is a womaniser, Arjun Kapoor failed class 12 and used to be fat, Ashish Shakya is dark… and so on). However, the AIB crew (and the guests) deserve props for an unapologetic, brash, rude to the point of offensive, no-holds barred act. The best part -- that everyone took it in their stride and laughed along.
