NEW DELHI: Celebrated United States swimming Michael Phelps has won a total of 21 Olympic gold medals. That’s more than twice as many gold medals at the Games as the athlete second on the list, former Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina (with nine), and Phelps may not be done at that tally as he just qualified for the 200m individual medley at the 2016 Olympics.

To put this feat in perspective, sample this: Phelps has won more gold medals than all but 39 countries that partake in the Olympic games.

Having won his 21st gold in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay with Conor Dwyer, Townley Haas, and Ryan Lochte on Tuesday, Phelps now equals Ethiopia's total tally. He has already surpassed Argentina and Austria (countries with populations of 41.4m and 8.5m respectively). If Phelps wins two more golds at the Rio Olympics, he will equal South Africa and the hosts, Brazil.

Now here’s the kicker: Behind him are 189 present or historical countries.
