Salman Khan Gets Five Years in Jail

NEW DELHI: Idol status ensured a second by second account of the court proceedings, with Salman Khan being convicted for a five year rigorous imprisonment for killing one person and injuring four others in September 2002. The hit-and-run case in which one person was killed and four injured. Khan was driving his SUV, with the court upholding the charge that he was drunk and had lost control.
Khan broke down when the punishment was read out by the court, as did his sister. His mother fell ill after the court verdict. The media of course had a field day with hysterical anchors and reporters shouting into the mike, seeking to ‘break’ news before the others.
Khan arrested earlier on poaching charges. He had spent two years in jail then.

Khan has been convicted under the following clauses:
Sec 304 (Part II) of IPC - Culpable homicide not amounting to murder (Max 10 years in jail)
Sec 279 of IPC - Rash and Negligent Driving (6 Months in jail)
Sec 337 of IPC - Causing hurt by act endangering life (2 years in jail)
Sec 338 of IPC - Causing grievous hurt (2 years in jail)
Sec 427 of IPC -- Mischief causing danger to property (2 years in jail)
The court is not holding any perjury charges against the driver, who had appeared before it to claim that he and not Khan was driving the Land Cruiser at the time. He has three days to appeal to the Mumbai High Court before the courts recess for vacation from May 10.
