JabxHook. On paper, BoxFit is a studio that offers group classes and personal training with an emphasis on boxing and kickboxing - but in reality, it's a lot more than that. It’s one of the few places in the capital that gets the importance of the right vibe + energy to an effective workout - and as their recent Instagram post reads, ‘what’s fitness without a little fun?’

Step into a BoxFit class and you’re instantly pumped. It’s dark, the music is loud, the instructors know what they’re doing, and everyone is pushing themselves - an extra ten burpees? No problem. Step out of the class and you’ll see an Instagram notification - you’ve just been tagged in BoxFit’s insta story, going ham on that punching bag.

We catch up with Rahul Kaul - one of the founders of BoxFit - on the space, its vibe, the workout, his approach to fitness, and most importantly, BoxFit’s Instagram strategy (fire emoji x 100).

How would you describe BoxFit to someone who wasn't in the know?

Boxfit is for all fitness levels. It is more than just a fitness boxing studio; It’s a community of like minded individuals who appreciate great music, positive vibes, don’t take themselves too seriously and just want to have fun while getting in shape.

We truly believe that working out should never be boring and that’s why we encourage people to workout together in a group with great music; these are interactive workouts and classes led by some of the best instructors in Delhi.

When you enter Boxfit, we want you to have the best hour of your day and give it all you got on the boxing bag, leaving all your worries behind.

You're one of the founders of BoxFit. What inspired you to start this space?

Fitness has been a part of my life ever since I could remember. I always felt that there was something missing with the way fitness is done in conventional gyms, but I couldn’t place my finger on what was missing.

It’s only when I started boxing in South America that I realized that fitness needs to be fun; something regular folks should look forward to, instead of seeing it as a punishment or something they need to do before they go for vacations.

The day I started boxing, 7 years back, is the day I fell in love with boxing. How intense yet fun it can be.

Boxing blew my mind, not only as a sport but as a workout as well and it was then I realized that we need something like this back home. A boxing based workout that is accessible to everyone regardless of your fitness level.

(The instructors)

You've recently added a second location (the first studio is in New Delhi’s Greater Kailash 1), and are now amongst the top fitness recommendations in the capital. Take us through the journey so far. What did it take going from an idea to making it to Delhi’s must-try list.

Yes we have opened another centre in Vasant Vihar C-Block main market (New Delhi). Once we saw the love we were getting, opening a second one was a no brainer. The journey has been rocky but fun and we have faced our fair share of ups and downs and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

We think of ourselves in the ‘changing lives business’. If someone instils their trust in us then it’s our responsibility to make sure we do whatever needs to be done for them to reach their goals.

I have been really lucky to be surrounded by a great team and in all honesty I would credit them with all that we have achieved so far. We have some of the best instructors in Delhi, not only in terms of knowledge but how they engage the audience and make the workouts super fun. It’s a rare combination to have and that’s why I feel so lucky to be surrounded by such a great team.

Tell us a little about yourself. What's your background? Have you always been into fitness and has it always been boxing / kickboxing centric?

I am a financial analyst by profession having done my MBA in finance from Symbiosis and worked as a stock analyst in Mumbai and commodity trader in South America.

Fitness and sports have been a part of my life ever since I opened my eyes. In the past I have been involved in football, cricket, bodybuilding but now my heart is completely in boxing and strength based calisthenics.

As an instructor, my classes involve boxing, bodyweight exercises, intense ab exercises and a whole lot of bad jokes.

(Rahul Kaul)

And what's your fitness routine like now. What do you do to stay fit?

Well I believe in the classes Boxfit has to offer. I make it a point no matter how busy I am, to attend at least 3 group classes a week. My favourite instructors are Sameer (uncle Sam) and Akhil (pretty boy).

Above that I make sure I eat healthy at least 6 days a week and one day I eat whatever I want. Apart from boxing, I add calisthenics to my programme as well. And most importantly I make sure I get in at least 8 hours of sleep every day.

Can you spell out some of the benefits of kickboxing + boxing. What can someone hope to get out of a class at BoxFit?

Boxing and kickboxing at Boxfit is a mind-body experience. We design your workouts to maximize results. However, burning up to 1000 calories, getting a strong core, lean and toned arms and legs is only half the experience. The other half is to get the best hour of your day and leave all your worries behind. Those 60-mins it’s just you focusing on your journey.

BoxFit is all over our Instagram - in a good way!! Take us through your social media strategy.

I’m so glad you brought up Instagram, ‘cause we absolutely love it. Social media is a reflection of what happens at BoxFit in real life. We just make sure everyone who steps into BoxFit has a great time and feels special and that love is reflected online.

And that’s the only social media strategy we have.

(What’s fitness without a little fun?)

What's next for BoxFit?

Priority for us is - how can we get better?!

We want to make sure the BoxFit experience improves on a daily basis and we want to be the number 1 fitness boxing studio in the world by 2025.

We also want to open our doors to as many like minded people as we can. Thus opening our third branch is definitely on the radar this year.

We are constantly on the lookout for talented instructors -- not necessarily with a background in martial arts, but people who want to help others improve their mental and physical health.

And finally - what are your top tips to build (and stick with) healthy habits?

Well my top tips are simple.

Eat well at least 6 days a week. Stay active, find a workout you love and do it at least 3 times a week. Make goals and stick to them, and don’t forget to have fun while you are at it.
