NEW DELHI: In addition to the position that Jawaharlal Nehru University is the den of “anti nationals”, a BJP MLA from Rajasthan has a couple of other grievances against the university that is currently in the throes of a ‘sedition’ controversy.

According to BJP MLA Gyandev Ahuja, JNU become a place for the “anti-nationals'', where students “dance nude” after 8 pm using the excuse of cultural programmed. The MLA then added, “3,000 condoms and anti-pregnancy injections are used daily” in the campus and that the students “do bad things with our daughters and sisters”.

“Also, you will be surprised to know everyday some 3,000 beer cans and bottles are used in the campus, who drinks it? Guess yourself,” he said.

“More than 10,000 cigarette buds and over 4,000 bidi parts are found everyday in the campus. And not only that, more than 50,000 bone, small and big, are found everyday. They gorge on meat.....these anti-nationals.”

The lawmaker added some of what has been heard before. “This is a place (JNU) where Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru is praised. These people are traitors,” he said.

The entire episode was captured on camera:

The controversial statements come as world attention focuses on JNU, as Student Union leader Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested on charges of sedition and conspiracy and charges were levelled against other students on campus.

The trouble started when some unidentified masked people shouting what have since been termed “anti-India” slogans at an event organised at JNU to mark the death anniversary of Parliament attack accused Afzal Guru. Although Kanhaiya Kumar made a speech denouncing the slogans that were raised, the police moved into campus and arrested Kumar, sparking outrage.

Critics allege that the government and police are taking high handed measures to muzzle and crush dissent, and came out in support of Kumar and other students at the University. The government, on its part supported the police action as Home Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted “Anyone who raises anti-India slogans or tries to put a question mark on nation’s unity and integrity will not be spared” and Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani said, “The nation can never tolerate any insult to mother India.”

Opponents, however, state that the government does not have enough evidence against Kumar or the other students, and were looking for an excuse to interfere in the University in favour of the right-wing lobby and the BJP’s student wing, the ABVP. This assertion has received an impetus after it turned out that the videos being circulated on national TV as proof of the “anti India” sloganeering were doctored. It also emerged that a Tweet reproduced by the Home Minister and Delhi Commissioner of Police BS Bassi emanated from a fake Twitter handle, one posing as Lashkar-e-Taiba mastermind Hafiz Saeed.

At the time of writing, Kanhaiya Kumar’s bail plea is about to come up at the Delhi High Court, as his lawyers were able to bypass the Patiala Court where violence broke out on a few occasions as lawyers and at least one BJP politician beat up students, teachers and journalists. Kumar himself was thrashed within court premises, forcing the Supreme Court of India to take a stand.
